Screener Task Panel

The task panel at the left of the Screener contains folders with your custom screens, system-generated MarketSmith Stock and Fund Screens, screens you're tracking and your favorite screens. The task buttons at the top of the panel make it easy to create a new screen, copy or find an existing screen, or delete a screen. You can also right click anywhere in the Screener Task Panel to access these task functions.

  • Interacting within the Screener Task Panel impacts the display of contents within both the Screener window and List Contents.

Community Controls (Browse, Share, Copy)

Users can share their own screens with the rest of the MarketSmith investor community and search for or copy screens shared by other users.

Screen Description

At the bottom of the Screener task panel you’ll find a brief description of the screen currently in view, along with its corresponding rating, the number of members tracking it, and a link to view comments related to that screen.

*Note: only screens created and shared by the MarketSmith investor community are trackable.

Evaluating Screens with the Waterfall Summary

The Waterfall Summary summarizes the effect of your chosen screen criteria (i.e., your "inputs") on the number of stocks or funds returned in the results. It dynamically updates as you refine your search so that the waterfall effect of screen criteria selection, depicted by a "falling off" of stocks or funds, can be clearly seen. This feature will help you easily spot criteria that is either so narrow that it excludes most of the database, or that is so broad that it eliminates very few stocks or funds from your screen results. You can view your input summary in either a List or Graphic View by selecting the appropriate radio button.

As you build your screen, you have the option of screening against the entire O’Neil Database or individual lists. To modify the screen universe, click Change, and choose from user created or pre-set MarketSmith lists and reports.

Benchmarks Evaluator for Comparing Stock Screens

For the selected stock screen, the Benchmark Evaluator shows a comparison view of the median values of the stocks returned in your screen results versus those same values for a benchmark screen. The CAN SLIM® investment system is the default benchmark selection. Its values are based on our studies of the characteristics of the best performing stocks of all time before they made large price moves. Benchmark comparisons based on other investing styles can be found in the corresponding pulldown menu. *Note: this feature is only available for stock screens.

Screen Input Window

Screening categories are stacked in an accordion-style format. Clicking on a category header will expand or collapse the input category. You may also navigate the input categories by using the “Jump to” dropdown lists in the category headers. By making selections in the corresponding category input fields, you assign criteria that narrow your results set in the List Contents. You can track your criteria and their individual effect on your results set in the Waterfall Summary.
